2025년 5월, 미국 인디애나폴리스의 인디애나 컨벤션 센터에서 ‘2025 월드비어컵(World Beer Cup®)’ 시상식이 성황리에 개최되었다. 이 대회는 미국 소규모 독립 양조장을 대표하는 비영리 단체인 미국 양조자 협회(Brewers Association: BA) 주관으로 열리며, 세계에서 가장 권위 있는 상업 맥주 및 사이다 품평회로 인정받고 있다.
이번 대회는 국제 심사위원 132명을 포함해 37개국에서 온 265명의 심사위원이 7일 동안 14회에 걸쳐 심사 세션을 진행했다. 이를 통해 349개국 1,761개의 양조장과 사이더리가 117개 카테고리(맥주 112개, 사이더 5개)에 출품한 8,375개의 작품을 체계적으로 평가하였으며, 총 349개의 메달이 수여되었다.
월드비어컵 대회 디렉터 크리스 윌리엄스(Chris Williams)는 “이번 수상자 명단은 전 세계 크래프트 브루어리와 사이더리들이 헌신과 열정을 통해 어떤 수준의 기술력을 구현할 수 있는지를 보여주는 증거”라며, “이들은 업계 표준을 재정의하며 혁신과 건전한 경쟁을 유도하는 데 기여하고 있다”고 평가했다.
In May 2025, the awards ceremony for the 2025 World Beer Cup® was successfully held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, USA. Hosted by the Brewers Association (BA), a nonprofit organization representing small and independent American craft brewers, the competition is widely recognized as the most prestigious professional beer and cider competition in the world.
This year’s event featured 265 judges, including 132 international judges from 37 countries, who conducted 14 tasting sessions over seven days. A total of 8,375 entries from 1,761 breweries and cideries across 49 countries were evaluated in 117 categories (112 beer and 5 cider), and 349 medals were awarded.
Chris Williams, Competition Director of the World Beer Cup, stated, “This year’s winners exemplify the level of skill and dedication that craft brewers and cider makers across the world bring to their craft,” adding, “They are redefining industry standards and fostering innovation and healthy competition.”
이번 대회에서 가장 치열한 경쟁을 보인 부문은 ‘Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale’(290개 출품), ‘West Coast-Style India Pale’(253개), ‘American-Style IPA’(208개), ‘German-Style Pilsener’(186개) 순으로 나타났다. 이로써 IPA 계열의 스타일이 여전히 전 세계적으로 가장 인기 있는 크래프트 맥주 스타일임을 입증했다.

These results confirm that IPA styles remain the most popular craft beer styles globally.
이번 월드비어컵 2025에서는 일본 맥주가 총 13개의 메달(금 5, 은 3, 동 5)을 수상하며 미국을 제외한 국가 중 가장 많은 수상 기록을 세웠다. 이는 일본 크래프트 맥주의 기술력과 개성 있는 스타일이 국제 시장에서 강력한 경쟁력을 갖추고 있다는 것을 보여준다. 이와 함께 중국은 총 6개의 메달(금 1, 은 3, 동 2)을 획득하며 아시아 국가 중 2위를 기록했으며, 대만과 홍콩의 양조장도 각각 금메달과 동메달을 수상하는 등 아시아 전반의 크래프트 맥주 품질의 성장세를 보여주었다. 한국은 아쉽게도 올해 수상작을 배출하지 못했으나 2026 대회에서는 한국 맥주가 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
At the 2025 World Beer Cup, Japanese breweries took home a total of 13 medals (5 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze), the highest number of medals for a country other than the United States. This achievement highlights the technical prowess and unique styles of Japanese craft beer, showcasing their growing competitiveness in the global market. China also performed strongly, winning 6 medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), placing it second among Asian countries. Breweries from Taiwan and Hong Kong also won gold and bronze medals, respectively, underscoring the rising quality of craft beer across Asia. Although Korea did not win any awards this year, there is hope that Korean craft beer will achieve notable results at the 2026 competition.
